A Research and Innovation Agenda for the Baltic and North Sea regions
In June, the joint Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea region was launched. Ultimately the Agenda is developed to provide the basis for the future BANOS (the joint Baltic and North Sea Research and Innovation Programme) calls for interdisciplinary and transnational projects that generate new knowledge & innovation in support of the decision-making in the Baltic Sea and the North Sea region. The BANOS SRIA includes three strategic objectives:
- A. Healthy Seas and Coasts,
- B. Sustainable Blue Economy, and
- C. Human Wellbeing.
These are further divided into nine specific objectives and a total of 32 Research and Innovation themes. Ecosystem approach to management forms the precondition for achieving all these objectives. The scope of the entire programme is defined by three key attributes of ‘close connection to the ecosystem’, ‘dependence on climate impact’ and ‘geographic relevance to the Baltic Sea and North Sea’. The BANOS SRIA outlines also its policy relevant landscape and 10 so-called impact enablers, including impact monitoring, synthesis, effective communication and open science & innovation, among other. The European partnership ‘Climate-neutral, sustainable and productive blue economy’ is viewed as a key implementation mechanism of the BANOS SRIA.
You can find the SRIA and read more on the BANOS website.
