Horizon Europe -symbolically- launched
The ambitious 9th EU Research & Innovation Framework Programme for 2021-2027; Horizon Europe, was symbolically launched on the 2nd of February at an international virtual conference, organised by the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union. However, several details on significant parts of the programme still need to be decided upon, a final Council agreement on part of the legislation is not expected before April. The Horizon Europe programme will be the biggest one ever undertaken in Europe, with over EUR 95 billion.
HEU has several novel or updated features. The new approach to Partnerships should combine and coordinate a broad range of (existing and new) Research and Innovation activities to address common priorities jointly with Member States, the private sector, foundations and other stakeholders. The first Partnership are expected to start in the second quarter of 2021. The Missions are a new element. Each mission is a mandate to solve a pressing challenge in society within a certain timeframe and budget. The missions are envisioned to be bold, inspiring and relevant to society and its citizens. They aim to deliver solutions to some of the greatest challenges facing our world.
